By A cardiologist’s retelling of a daughter’s extraordinary gift to her father is spreading across social media, offering a reminder of just how far family members will go for one another.
Dr. Afshine Emrani, a California cardiologist and author, shared the story Wednesday of a 25-year-old ICU nurse who spent eight months quietly completing the medical testing required to donate a kidney to her father. She knew he would never agree to accept it from her, so she arranged for hospital records to identify her simply as an anonymous altruistic donor.
The father and daughter underwent surgery in adjoining operating rooms. Afterward, still wearing a hospital gown and pushing an IV pole, the young woman walked into her father’s recovery room.
When he realized what she had done and saw the bandages on her abdomen, Emrani wrote, “there are no words in human language for the sound a father makes.”
Delayne Ivanowski was 25 when she secretly donated a kidney to her father, John Ivanowski, in February 2023. John, of Kirkwood, Missouri, had developed kidney failure from IgA nephropathy and was undergoing dialysis.
He had also already endured the loss of a young son to cancer and wanted no part of putting his daughter through major surgery on his behalf.
“I told her, I’m not taking your kidney,” he later recalled.
Delayne had other plans.
She quietly underwent blood draws and other testing, hiding bruises from her father and working with the transplant team at Barnes-Jewish Hospital to make sure the secret remained intact. On Feb. 16, 2023, both underwent surgery. The following day, Delayne entered her father’s hospital room and finally told him who his donor had been.
Video captured John’s stunned reaction as he realized his daughter had given him her kidney. The emotional reunion quickly spread across TikTok and national news outlets.
Emrani shared video of the moment again Wednesday while explaining that the story carries special meaning for him now. He said one of his own patients and the patient’s daughter are “walking this exact same sacred, terrifying path.”
He asked readers to offer “a prayer, an intention, and all the healing energy you have for both of them.”
The post quickly surpassed 360,000 views, with the story finding a new audience more than three years after the Ivanowskis’ transplant.
Living kidney donations can dramatically shorten the wait for patients who might otherwise spend years hoping for a deceased-donor organ. For the Ivanowski family, however, the statistics hardly capture what happened.
A father who refused to risk his daughter’s health received another chance at life because his daughter refused to take no for an answer.
Emrani closed his post with “Modeh Ani,” a Hebrew expression of gratitude upon waking and receiving another day of life.
For one father, that gratitude came with a kidney — and a daughter determined to make sure he had many more mornings ahead.
