Boy Scout Hero Saves His Leader’s Life

A Houston teenager is being recognized for extraordinary courage after a split-second decision during a summer rafting trip saved a life—and turned a moment of danger into a lasting example of composure under pressure.

Devon Champenoy, now 15, has received one of Scouting America’s rarest honors for his actions during a whitewater outing in Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains two years ago. At the time, he was just 13.

Champenoy and fellow members of his Houston-area troop were navigating Class III rapids during a summer camp trip when Assistant Scoutmaster David Lemley was thrown from the raft, according to The Houston Chronicle. Lemley initially managed to climb back aboard and even joked about the experience. But moments later, he was ejected again—this time with his foot trapped beneath a seat as the raft surged through rough water.

With his head repeatedly forced underwater and striking rocks, Lemley was left fighting for air as the raft sped downstream.

Without hesitation, Champenoy moved into action. Steadying himself against the current, he crossed the raft, located Lemley’s trapped foot, and freed it, allowing nearby kayakers to help bring the scoutmaster to safety.

“I have no doubt that if Devon hadn’t released my foot, I was going to die,” Lemley later told reporters.

Champenoy, reflecting on the moment, said his response came naturally. “It took a while for me to take in the fact that this happened and I saved a life,” he said. “I didn’t feel it at the moment. It was just instinct.”

Lemley suffered a broken foot but survived the ordeal. With the raft still facing another stretch of challenging rapids—and several younger, first-time campers onboard—Champenoy stepped into a leadership role. He took control of the raft and guided the group safely through the remaining 15 to 20 minutes of whitewater until they reached calmer conditions.

For what Scouting America described as “unusual heroism and extraordinary skill,” Champenoy was awarded the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, one of the organization’s highest distinctions. Fewer than 300 have been awarded in more than a century.

The recognition places Champenoy in rare company and underscores the enduring value of training, preparedness, and calm decision-making in high-pressure situations.

He also received special recognition from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, adding to a growing list of honors for the young scout.

Now working toward his Eagle Scout rank, Champenoy is being praised not only for his quick thinking but for the steady leadership he showed after the immediate danger had passed.

The episode serves as a reminder that the lessons taught in scouting—preparedness, responsibility, and service to others—can carry real-world consequences. In this case, they made the difference between tragedy and survival, and turned a summer outing into a story of quiet heroism.
